U2 was originally formed in Dublin, Ireland in 1976 when the band members were all teenagers with limited musical talent. Larry Mullen Jr. was fourteen, and placed a notice on his school notice board, looking for musicians to join him. Seven boys in their teens met for the initial practice in Mullen’s kitchen.

They originally named themselves “Feedback” because it was one of the few technical terms they knew. U2 have had changed considerably since their humble beginnings in 1976, but one thing that has remained constant is their line-up. There are four members that have been there from the start, who are: Larry Mullen Jr. Paul Hewson (Bono), Adam Clayton, and Dave Evans (Edge).
U2 is still currently performing and putting out music today. Similar to the Rolling Stones they have been around for a long time, but that is where similarities end. U2 is a different band all together, especially for their music, which focuses on alternative rock, and post-punk rock, rather than the rock and roll that the Rolling Stones are famous for.
Success was a long time coming for U2. Their first milestone was in 1978 when they won a talent quest in Ireland with a prize of £500 and studio time to record a demo.
Their first album “Boy” was released in 1980, but it was not until 1983 with the release of “War”, their first UK number 1 album, that they tasted real success. In 1984, following the release of “Unforgettable Fire” U2 embarked on a 9 month tour taking in 54 dates in the US. The tour led to the unforgettable appearance in “Live Aid” in July 1985.
Since their formation, U2 have recorded 13 studio albums, with their latest being “No Line on the Horizon” released in February 2009. U2’s worldwide album sales are close to 150 million, which places them with the elite of the music industry. A highlight of the amazing career of this band from Ireland was their performance at the 2002 Super Bowl. It was a performance that has been talked about for years and is considered by NFL organizers, and the best of all time.
In June 2009 U2 began their 360° Tour which takes in European and North American stadium dates in 2009. It is expected that additional shows will continue in 2010. The shows feature a 360-degree configuration, where the fans surround a central stage.
